On October 14th, the "Deaf Sports & Art Fair" was held at Isle Shinagawa to spread awareness of Deaf Sports and promote understanding of hearing impairment. Approximately 1,600 people visited the event on the day of the event, and participants had the chance to experience the world of differential gear through hands-on sessions on differential sports and workshops using sign language.
The Deaf Soccer experience will be led by players from the Japanese national team, led by coach Hayato Uematsu, who won runner-up in the recent World Cup, while the Deaf Basketball experience will be taught by six Japanese national team players and an assistant coach from the Japanese national team, and the participants will be top-class players in Japan. I learned about each sport.
At the art workshop, Hidehiko Kado, who creates art using sign language as a motif, completed a giant painting by drawing on the walls of Isle Shinagawa together with the participants.
At the Deaflympics awareness booth, the Shinagawa Ward Association for the Hearing Impaired held a sign language experience corner, and a panel display was used to educate visitors about the Deaflympics.
At a theater workshop run by Tetsuya Izaki from the Japan Deaf Theater Company and organized by the Tot Foundation, all participants experienced “sign mime,'' a technique of expressing scenes and psychology using hands and facial expressions.
“Listening to an orchestra with an ontenna'' used devices that sense sound through light and vibration, and both hearing and deaf people enjoyed a performance by an orchestra presenter.
In preparation for the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics, which is scheduled to be held in 2025, Shinagawa City will continue to develop projects to promote understanding of hearing loss and raise awareness of the Deaflympics.
