On Friday, March 14th, a traditional crafts workshop was held at Shinagawa Ward Yamanaka Elementary School.
The Traditional Crafts Experience Classes are classes where artisans visit elementary schools and compulsory education schools in the ward to pass on skills and traditional culture.
The theme of this class is "Edo Sudare"!!
Mr. Yuji Suzuki from the Shinagawa Ward Traditional Crafts Preservation Society gave us instruction in the "Edo Sudare" experience!
The children were very interested in the demonstration of the craftsmanship involved throwing a tool called a nagedama and weaving the fabric.
We also tried our hand at making placemats using Edo sudare (reviewed bamboo blinds) manufacturing methods.
Everyone who completed their beautiful placemats looked happy and said, "I'd like to use them during lunch!"
