A traditional crafts experience class was held at Shinagawa Ward's Ohara Elementary School on Friday, October 11th.
The Traditional Crafts Experience Classes are classes where artisans visit elementary schools and compulsory education schools in the ward to pass on skills and traditional culture.
The theme of this class is "Tatami"!!
The lecturer will be Matsui Masaharu from the Shinagawa Ward Traditional Crafts Preservation Society.
We heard about the manufacturing process and history of tatami mats, and then tried our hand at making coasters using tatami mats.
Some children were surprised at how sturdy the tatami was, saying, "It's harder than I thought it would be," but they were able to create lovely coasters by lining them with their favorite patterns.
